During their practical training at the Wildlife Rescue Center, students of the Thracian University visited the Sakar region to learn about "Lesser Kestrel Recovery" LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project.
First, the trainees visited Green Balkans’ facility established in the village of Levka, Svilengrad Municipality, harboring the newly built adaptation aviary for release of Lesser Kestrels. There, the students of the Thracian University observed, fed, and recorded the newly arrived birds. Later that day, they took part in the survey of habitats suitable for Lesser Kestrels and Imperial Eagles.
Another exciting adventure for the young nature lovers was the transhumance of thirty horses (herd), again as a part of the project "Lesser Kestrel Recovery" LIFE11 NAT/BG/360. These horses provide short grass pastures for the small birds of prey, so that they can easily catch their prey (insects, rodents, and small reptiles). And, since the horses had done their work in the territory they had inhabited until then, it was time to be moved somewhere else. Seven trainees were actively involved in the efforts to herd on the semi-wild horses to their new habitat. This was also combined with deparasitation of the quadrupeds, which made the entire exercise even more difficult and interesting. That very day, local farmers’ sheep and goats were also deparasitated, again with the support of our young assistants.
Another place of personal contact of the future ecologists and veterinarians with the wildlife of the Sakar region was the surroundings of the village of Matochina, Svilengrad Municipality, where Green Balkans’ Information Center is situated. There, the trainees felt the magic of the mountain – an area of key significance for a number of rare plant and animal species.
The practical training of the students at Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center is implemented within “School practices and student practices” project of the Ministry of Education and Science.
